Lights Out Indy

Amos W. Butler Audubon, through the Lights Out Indy initiaitve, is working to save the lives of migratory birds. This photo of a dead Yellow-rumped Warbler taken in October 2009 captures part of the problem faced by migratory birds. Birds do not recognize glass as an obstacle. Glass that reflects vegetation or situations where a bird can see through a building are especially deadly. Excess overnight lighting also plays a role.

This Yellow-rumped Warbler was found dead on a ground floor window sill of the Indiana Historical Society. It probably flew into the window because it thought it was flying to the tree being reflected in the window. For more information about our efforts please visit lightsoutindy.org.
